The deployment of technology for online learning in Kenya and Africa
During
the past few years, online learning has made education accessible to students
especially where physical schools are very rare to find. Online learning is
more affordable since no transportation, accommodation, and sometimes no
physical textbooks is required.
Since
Covid-19, the Kenyan government has shown support for online learning
especially those introduction policies whose purpose is to promote online
learning. Initiatives like the "Kenya Education Cloud" aim to provide
centralized resources for students and educators across the country.
Generally,
Africa has significant growth in technology, and this significant growth of
technology has facilitated online learning for students in Africa which has
opened doors to quality education in urban and rural areas.
This
article briefly explains the advancements, challenges, and impacts of
technology in facilitating online learning in Kenya and Africa.
Advancements of technology in facilitating online learning in Kenya and
Africa
Advancements
of technology are important in facilitating online learning in Africa.
·
The increase of internet infrastructure such
as fiber optic cables, mobile networks and satellite connections has improved
access to online learning platforms.
·
Mobile learning platforms. Due to the
high mobile penetrations in Africa, mobile phones have become primary tool for
online learning. Platforms like M-tutor and Eneza allow students to access
learning materials and quizzes through SMS making education more accessible.
·
Digital classrooms and virtual
learning environments. Tools like Google classroom and Microsoft teams have
become essential for students and teachers to connect with each other. These
platforms allow the teaching process to take place, enabling live lessons,
assignment submissions, grading and communication.
·
This further stimulates an
interactive learning experience outside traditional classrooms.
·
Online teacher training and Capacity
Building. Teachers in Kenya and Africa have been benefiting from online training
programs, helping them improve their digital literacy skills and be able to
incorporate technology into their teaching.
·
E-Textbooks and Open Educational
Resources. Digital textbooks, which are often available for free or at low cost,
have made learning materials available for all students.
·
Cloud Computing and data storage.
With cloud technology, schools and universities can share documents, videos and
textbooks, enhance collaboration and reduce dependency on physical
textbooks.
These advancements help in the deployment of technology in
facilitating online learning in Kenya and Africa. Despite these advancements in
technology enabling education to be more accessible, there are also challenges
technology has in facilitating online learning in Kenya and Africa.
Challenges of technology in facilitating online learning in
Kenya and Africa
There
are some challenges deploying technology has in facilitating online learning in
Kenya and Africa.
1. Limited
Internet connectivity.
·
Despite improvements, many areas
still lack access to reliable internet. This is due to the poor infrastructure,
low bandwidth and high cost of internet.
2. High cost of technology and devices
·
Some students are unable to afford
devices such as smartphones and laptops which is necessary for online learning.
· Schools may not have the necessary equipment to implement digital learning programs.
3. Teachers and students may lack the necessary
skills to incorporate technology in education or may lack the necessary skills
to use digital tools in online platforms.
4. Many platforms don’t have learning materials
that is suitable to the African context, making it less relevant to students in
Africa.
5. Electricity
and power issues.
·
Many places in Africa have frequent
power outrages which can disrupt online learning, making it harder for students
to learn.
·
Even areas that have electricity, the
cost of electricity is high, making it difficult for students and schools to
access the power needed to charge devices and learn remotely.
6. Limited
Government Support.
Although some governments are supporting and making effort to improve digital learning, there is still a lack of comprehensive policies and funding.
For technology to be deployed in education,
these challenges faced should be overcome and given a lot of focus from
government, schools and educators.
Impact of technology in facilitating online learning in Kenya and Africa
·
Increased Accessibility to Education.
Online learning breaks geographic barriers and allows students in remote areas to
access education without the need to travel long distances.
·
Flexibility and Convenience. Students
can access their lessons at any time, which allows for a flexible learning
schedule.
·
Enhanced Learning Resources and
Content.
·
Access to Global Knowledge. Students
have access to knowledge from across the globe through the internet.
·
Improvement in Teacher Capacity and
Training.
· Collaboration and Networking.
Let’s look at some of the
opinions of teachers in Kenya about their experience with technology in online
learning.
Three teachers were surveyed about the deployment of technology in Africa and Kenya. The answers of what they said is shown below:
Technology in education is beneficial to
students in Kenya and Africa. He says when using technology in online learning,
it is not limited to a geographical location and secondly, it is able to
accommodate a big number of students attended by a single teacher. He points
out a challenge faced when implementing technology in education, which is poor
Infrastructure.
Another teacher explains
that online learning has a huge benefit to her as a teacher. It saves her time
and can teach many students at the same time. She also said that online
learning has increased student participation since those that find it hard to
engage in mass can find it easier while alone or can just type if they find it
hard to communicate. Students are also able to search ideas from different
sources, which gives them confidence.
The last teacher says that
students are reluctant to think critically knowing they can get access of the
information needed from other sources as compared to the traditional classroom
where it promotes creativity and critical thinking. The benefits, she experiences
as a teacher when using technology is that it's convenient to get information
from and not time consuming. It also gives room for different perspectives or
viewpoints.
Looking at these insights from educators can
give us ways to improve technology so quality and accessible education is given
to students in Kenya and Africa.
